Awarded to Lisa Pollak of The Baltimore Sun for her compelling portrait of a baseball umpire who endured the death of a son while knowing that another son suffers from the same deadly genetic disease.

Finalists

Also nominated as finalists in this category were: Jeffrey Fleishman of The Philadelphia Inquirer for his versatile storytelling, notably including an account of the flight of 15 Buddhist monks from Tibet through the Himalayas, and Julia Prodis of the Associated Press for her trio of vivid stories about three teenagers on a deadly journey, a photograph from the Oklahoma City bombing, and a vacuum cleaner that catches prairie dogs.
