Biography

Walt Handelsman is the nationally syndicated editorial cartoonist for The Times-Picayune in New Orleans.

He joined The Times-Picayune in August 1989. Before that, Walt worked for The Scranton (PA) Times from 1985 to 1989 and a national award-winning chain of 13 suburban Baltimore and Washington weeklies, from 1982 to 1985.

Walt, 40, a graduate of the University of Cincinnati, creates cartoons that appear in more than 100 papers around the country and internationally.

He is the winner of many local and national awards for cartooning excellence, including the prestigious 1996 Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, the 1993 and 1989 National Headliner Awards and the 1992 Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi Award.

He is the author of a collection of his editorial cartoons as well as a children's book published in 1995. Walt's cartoons are frequently reprinted in The New York Times, Newsweek, Time and USA Today.
